Stranger

You know those little interactions when someone helps you unexpectedly? Just a small gesture, interaction. Not because they are collecting points, putting you in debt, but from pure kindness.

Those not hesitating to show any kind of empathy are the biggest people in this world.

The old man

I was by the river when an old man approached with a bag full of corn. He started feeding the swans. He caught me staring and started a conversation(monologue).

He went on and on about their habits, how elegant and proud they look, while being vulnerable on the inside. Mentioned that if it weren't for individuals like him to take care of them, they wouldn't make it through winter.

The travelling couple

Again, by the river a woman came by and with a sweet English accent asked if she and her husband could sit with me, seeing that all the other benches were taken.

She was reading to him some basic Slovenian phrases like 'lahko noč'(good night), 'dobro jutro, kako si?'(good morning, how are you?)... , he would repeat after her, and then they would burst into laugh.

You know that trip around the globe we all promise ourselves we'll take? They seemed like they were living it.

The smiley woman

She takes orders in a restaurant. Extremely kind woman. She called me by name once. I wonder if she's doing that on purpose, knowingly how human brain would react.

I wonder if her job description says: smiling.

The receptionist

It was quarantine time. Dorms were completely empty. I went to do laundry and this lovely person, let me use the washing machine for free.

Made my day.

The cashier

There is this supermarket I visit regularly. Usually, I'm not that clumsy, but this time, gravity just decided to work. As I was approaching the cashier, things started to fall off of my basket. On my half way there I realized I've lost one of my leeks. Luckily I was the only one in there, so quickly went back and picked it up. When I finally made it to the cashier, she was all bubbly smiling and saying how I'm allowed to put the basket up and there is no need to rush.. (yeah right) .

As the maximum conversation I've ever had in a supermarket were 'hello' and 'goodbye', I was super excited when she asked me how I would cook all those leeks..

There were like good 5 seconds of processing her question, as if I don't only cook two kind of meals with it (okay, we'll count the language barrier too).

All in all, I left the supermarket with a big fat smile on my face.

To sum it up,

Being kind, matters.

Being available and hearing people out, matters.

Taking care of something/someone, matters.

Laughing out loud, matters.

Smiling with your eyes, matters.

Loving your job, matters.

Just be nice. Be nice to yourself, to others.. it will only cost you good feelings.
